Swedish Cinnamon Buns | Blogmas Day 4

Sunday, December 04, 2016

Christmas time and winter in general is baking time for me. I love trying out different new recipes, making traditional Christmas biscuits and just generally have the flat smell of delicious baked goods. And what better smell could there be than that of cinnamon?! Right, there's nothing more Christmas appropriate, well scented and delicious! That paired with my growing obsession with everything Swedish, it comes as no surprise that I chose to make some Swedish cinnamon buns. OH EM GEE they are good! And there's nothing complicated about them either! So here's what I did.

You'll need:

150g butter
500ml milk
50g fresh yeast
150g caster sugar
1tsp salt
1tsp cardamom
700g flour

For the filling:

100g butter
200g sugar
2tbsp cinnamon

For garnishing:

2 eggs
decorating sugar/ coarse sugar

Method:

Melt the butter, then add the milk and warm it all up (make sure it doesn't get to hot or your yeast won't dissolve in it). Dissolve the yeast in your buttery milk then add your sugar, salt, cardamom and the flour. Knead your dough until you've got a smooth ball of dough (if necessay you can add more of the flour now). Put the dough back in the bowl and cover with a clean tea towel and leave to raise for about 30 - 40 minutes.

Divide your dough into three equal pieces then roll out one after the other on a well floured surface. Try to make it a thin rectangular shape. Brush on your melted butter. In a bowl, mix your sugar and cinnamon, then add a lot of it onto the buttered dough. Roll the dough into one massive roll, then cut it in slices of about 4cm.

Place the slices on a lined baking tray, cut side down and leave to rise again for about 30 more minutes. In the meantime whisk your eggs. Now brush your 'Kanelbullar' or cinnamon buns with the whisked egg and decorate with coarse sugar (should you want to do that).

Bake for 10 - 15 minutes at 250°-275°C in a preheated oven.

Now enjoy the fruits of your labour :)

These were a big hit with everyone I shared with! And I will sure make some more! They are also the perfect (not so healthy) weekend breakfast I think. Oh and do try them warm, that's when they're at their best!

Let me know if you try this at home (note: you totally should!). What are your favourite winter recipes? Do you enjoy baking? And have you ever tried proper Swedish Kanelbullar in Sweden?

Lots of Love,
Jess xx

  2. These look so awesome, cinnamon buns/rolls are one of my fav baked goods of all time. I agree that there's probably no better smell than that of cinnamon, except maybe apple and cinnamon!
