Body Positivity + Being Yourself

Sunday, March 13, 2016

This is a bit of a different post for me but something I still feel very passionate about. In today's society where it's easier than ever to compare yourself to others - that perfectly fit and seamlessly tanned model in that bikini ad, pretty girls all over Instagram, well dressed and perfectly make-upped stars, you name it - it's so so easy to feel bad about yourself, wish for a smaller nose, a bigger bum, a skinnier physique and so on. What's important to remember is, that everybody (you too!) will only ever post the most flattering pictures of themselves on Instagram. We all like a good filter making us look more glowing, a bit skinnier, maybe even giving us some cheekbones! But it's all too easy for us to forget that when looking at other people's perfect 'Instagram bodies'.

Magazines aren't helping either I find. Obviously title pages will always be highly photoshopped and I think we all know that by now but how come there's a five page article about loving yourself and feeling comfortable in your own skin, followed by a fifteen page editorial on 'How to get the perfect bikini bod in just 5 weeks!'?!? Conflicting messages eh? We're confronted with these pictures and messages wherever we turn and that's why it's more important than ever for our generation to feel body positive, love ourselves and be kind to ourselves. Remember, we're all beautiful in our very own and unique way!

A few things that help me feel body positive are:

Working out! Not to get a 'bikini body' (seriously what even is that?!) but simply to feel strong and fit and good about myself. Whenever I've been for a run or completed my morning workout at home I just feel amazing afterwards (I even sometimes celebrate with nutella toast and that's ok! ;) )

Clothes! Who doesn't feel good about themselves in sexy lingerie and figure-flattering clothes? Definitely the easiest way to do something for your body positivity. Whatever shape you are there's pretty clothes for big girls, skinny girls, tall girls, tiny girls, everybody! I especially love the selection of different clothes for different body types on Asos! There's also loads of lovely lingerie for all sizes on Adore Me, who are currently running a little campaign on Body Positivity, check out their video featuring YouTuber Loey Lane here. If you want to learn more about Adore Me and their campaign, head over to their YouTube here.

Keeping it real! I might find my tummy isn't quite as flat as I'd like it to be, but at the same time I rather like my eyes and boobs. My hair isn't all that bad either (most of the time..). See just look at yourself and appreciate the things you like about yourself! There's no reason to compare yourself, just keep doing you!

Thank you so much for reading guys! This is probably the most personal post I've ever written and it took me quite a while to find the right tone too! Just remember people: Every body is a bikini body!

What about you? Do you struggle with staying body positive? Do you find yourself being influenced by images on Social Media a lot? What's your tips and tricks on feeling good in your own skin?

Lots of Love,
Jess xx

  1. Love this post! Before becoming pregnant I struggled with staying body positive so bad! I just felt like I could never lose weight. After I give birth though I've decided I am NOT going back to that state of mind! I'm just going to try my hardest and try to feel good with the body I end up with!

  2. Yes! I love this post x 1 million! Every day it seems harder to not want someone else's body, but you're right - no one looks like a magazine model, not even the magazine models! I'm just happy being healthy and I try to encourage others to do the same!
