Neuschwanstein Castle Bavaria - Photo Diary
Wednesday, April 23, 2014If you follow me on Instagram, you might know that I spent Easter Sunday being a tourist in my own country. I finally visited Neuschwanstein castle! A trip down south to see this beautiful fairytale castle has been on my list for absolute ages. When I lived abroad and told people that I'm from Germany/Bavaria people always asked questions about two things: Neuschwanstein castle and the Oktoberfest, always resulting in me having to tell them that actually I've seen neither. Obviously this had to change! So on Sunday I got in the car for a 3 hours drive to the very south of Bavaria. I have to say I was absolutely inappropriately dressed with only a t-shirt and a denim jacket because it was absolutely freezing down there - quite the contrast to warm and sunny Nuremberg where the journey started.
Another thing needs to be mentioned: visiting Neuschwanstein is for very patient people only! We've been in a massive car queue for over an hour til we finally reached the car park and could start on our adventure. Also be prepared for long waiting times for the toilets, the ticket offices and the actual entrance to the castle. Prebooking via the internet isn't possible so there seems to be no way around those queues.
Even though all the waiting around wasn't exactly fun we still had an amazing time and I was absolutely wowed by both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castle, the lakes, the Marienbrücke (Mary's bridge), the mountains and all the nature we saw so it was definitely worth it to go!
Here are some of the snaps I took:
Like I said the weather wasn't the best but I love how moody and mysterious the castle looks under the heavy clouds and grey sky. Next time I get anywhere near the Alps I will take a big comfy hoody though, however warm it is at home :) All the walking uphill was a proper workout and I can still feel my legs ache a little. When I arrived home I went straight to bed and slept tight til late the next morning.
Have you ever been to Neuschwanstein castle? How did you like it there? Did you have to wait ages as well? Or have you been to other castles or old towns and would recommend visiting those? Please let me know in the comments below.
Love,
Jess
